Many people use external mail application like Outlook and Thunderbird to manage their e-mails and that’s why webmail services like Gmail provide free POP3 access. Unfortunately Yahoo considers this to be a premium feature and charged their users with $20 / year for it.
Those of you that want to use Outlook together with a Yahoo account can try YPOP! Because this is a free and open source application that will offer POP3 and SMTP access for free Yahoo! Mail accounts.
How is this possible? Well… the application installs a server on your desktop that will allow your mail application to communicate (via HTTP) with the Yahoo! Mail server.
According to the developers: this is not a violation of Yahoo!’s terms of service.
