A few days ago, Microsoft released for download on the official website the Microsoft Security Essentials (also known as Moro). this is a new anti-virus software that apparently is climbing very fast into the Top 10 greatest AVs.

All you need to do is to use your Connect account to sign in (you can register if you don’t have one) and start the download. Microsoft released only 75,000 spots for beta testers but this number will be increased according to the received demands.

According to many testers this program works great and it really does a pretty good job detecting those nasty trojans.

Sumatra PDF is an open source, free and lightweight PDF viewer, designer for Windows. Its design is minimalistic and it’s made to be portable, occupying only 1Mb of space with only 1 file to carry around. It’s even smaller than Foxit Reader, that I used until now, but the best part is the portability. Highly recommended if you have the habit of carrying around your programs on a USB stick. You can see below how Sumatra PDF looks like when open.

Ever tried making a bootable device in Windows? It’s not something that can be done easily usually, but Lexar BootIt might be just what you need. The partitioning you need to do yourself, but once you did that, the tool will create a bootable drive easily. The utility was made mainly for Lexar drives, but apparently they work on most other USB drives as well.

Type the volume label

Flip the removable bit if you have more than one partition

Mark the partition that is active

Go

Fotografix is a small, portable and free software that allows you to do a lot of the things that Photoshop does.

Fotografix is a free alternative to Photoshop, that will do the trick as long as you don’t need something too complex. It takes very little resources and it’s portable. It supports masks, layers and scripting. You also have a few other normal editing tools, like the rubber stamp, magic wand, elliptical and rectangular marquees.

If you want to edit some photos to post on blogs, Fotografix might be just what you need. I for one will switch to it for a while to see how it goes.

If you watched HD quality videos on YouTube, you probably noticed that the URL doesn’t change when you switch to it from normal mode. Adding &hd=1 to the URL will do the trick in this case, allowing you to link directly to the HD version of the video.

Example:

youtube.com/watch?v=ZOmLnGrq-bA – this will show the standard version

youtube.com/watch?v=ZOmLnGrq-bA&hd=1 - this will show the HD version
